Wilds and scatters are the two most important special symbols in modern slots. Knowing what each does makes any game easier to follow.
Why a Wild may not replace a Scatter
A Wild substitutes only for the symbols named in the rules; it does not automatically replace a Scatter. Three Scatters do not universally trigger free spins either: the required count, reel positions and game mode can vary. If symbols appear without a bonus, compare the exact combination with that version's rules before assuming a malfunction.
Wild symbols
A wild substitutes for other symbols to help complete a winning combination — much like a joker in cards. Some wilds also carry multipliers, expand to fill a reel, or stay in place across spins.
Scatter symbols
Scatters pay or trigger features regardless of where they land, rather than needing to line up on a payline. Landing a set number of scatters commonly launches the free spins round.
Why they matter
Most of a slot's biggest wins come from these symbols working together — for example, wilds landing during a scatter-triggered bonus. The paytable explains exactly how each behaves in that specific game.
What to remember
Wild and scatter behaviour differs from slot to slot, so never assume. A quick look at the paytable tells you whether wilds expand, whether scatters pay cash, and how many you need to trigger the feature.
Read position, timing and payout separately
A symbol's name does not establish its complete behavior. A wild might be absent from the first reel, replace only ordinary symbols or apply a multiplier only when it participates in a win. A scatter might pay anywhere, require particular reels or only trigger a feature without paying directly. “Three symbols” is incomplete unless the rules specify which symbols, where and in what mode.
If a feature did not trigger, save the round record and compare the actual layout with that version's conditions. Check whether the symbols appeared in the base game, free spins or a purchased mode. Do not place additional bets merely to recreate an apparent error. Ask support for the relevant round and rule. Special symbols do not predict how soon another bonus will appear.
